Women´s Artistic Hampshire levels results

8 gymnasts from the women´s artistic squad competed on the 20th September at the Hampshire levels held at dynamo Gymnastic club. For six of these girls it was there first levels competition and every one of the girls performed with great confidence throughout the competition. This competition was the first of two competitions for the end of this year, the other held on the 3rd October is the southern region levels. If the girls perform as well in this competition as the last they should be very proud of themselves.

British Success for Adult Gym

Basingstoke's adult squad yet another successful outing at the British Veterans Championships, the highlight of the adult gymnastics calendar:

Trampolining Southern Region Grading Competition

A Fantastic outing. In a huge competition with 240 entrants Basingstoke were the only club to have all their competitors achieve qualification to the next Grade!

Adult Gym Competition Success

Congratulations to our adult squad who had a successful weekend at the Basingstoke Adult Invitational competing against gymnasts from throughout the UK:

In the Sports Acrobatics section, there was gold for the mixed pair of Louise Palmer and Andy Strickland and the women's pair of Tracy Rickards & Claire Williams. Steve Bond and Lisa Butler took silver in the mixed pair.

In the Women's Artistic competition, Natalie Williams won gold in the Intermediate section, as did Heather Seabourne in the Beginners section. In her first competition, Sarah Moore got the silver in the Beginners category and Lisa Butler took home a bronze at Intermediate level.

Not to be out done, David Cahill won the Men's Artistic Beginners category, as did Andy Strickland in the Trampolining Formers competition.

The squad are now looking forward to the British Veterans Championships on Saturday 19th September, held at Basingstoke.

Land's to John o' Groats Sponsored Bike Ride

Paul Liversidge, a father of one of Basingstoke’s gymnasts, is embarking on a Land's End to John o' Groats Cycle ride with friends of his to raise money to be split between a new tumble track for Basingstoke Gymnastics Club and to support the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

British Tumbling Championships 2009

The tumbling squad had a fantastic weekend at the 2009 British Championships in Stoke-on-Trent, finishing with six medals!

The weekend finished with Basingstoke winning two senior medals, with Allana Penny winning the silver in the senior women’s category and David-Ray Wood winning the bronze medal in the men’s category.

Jordan Lucas, competing for the first time in the 15-16 age group, finished as British Champion, as did Matthew Hills in the men’s 9-10 category. Jodie Langley and Keira Blakey (competing for the first time) both won bronze medals, in the women’s 15-16 and 9-10 age groups respectively.

Several other gymnasts were very close to medal positions, with Connor Hamilton-Giles and Alex Hicken finishing 4th and 5th in the men’s 11-12 category and Eden Tulk and Yasmin Taite finishing 4th and 5th in the women’s 13-14 category!

Dan Lannigan, in his first senior competition, qualified in the top 8 and made it through to finals, as did Chloe Chaplin in the women’s 9-10 category, and at her first national competition.

Several of the younger gymnasts were competing for the first time and performed extremely well. The squad are now looking on building on this success and preparing for the trials for the World Championships in Russia later this year.

Hampshire and IOW Sport Awards

Basingstoke Junior Teamgym recently attended the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Sports Awards held at the Hampshire Rosebowl. Nominated in the Junior Team of the Year category, the team unfortunately didn't win but were delighted to make the final three against such strong competition. The team, represented by Sam Lucas, Nicole Mohan and coach Claire Williams, were in impressive company with a number of Olympians and World Champions attending the event.

5 girls from Basingstoke Gymnastic Club competed in the Southern Region elite compulsory grades on the 15th March 2009. This competition was the qualifiers for the British Elite Compulsory grade finals in May 2009.

Competing in the compulsory 4 age group saw Amy Lee-Sui and Olivia Berringer both in their first regional competition. The two girls both achieved the qualifying score to compete in the National Championships. Olivia finished in overall 7th place and 2nd on the Asymmetric Bars with fellow team mate Amy finishing in overall 6th place and taking 1st position on the floor.

The next age group compulsory 3 had Poppy White and Emily Lannigan, both competing with great confidence from the first piece. Emily finishing in overall 6th place, selected as traveling reserve for the southern region team and qualified individual at the national finals. Team mate Poppy had an outstanding competition being the only gymnast out of the whole age group not to fall on any piece of apparatus, finishing in overall 2nd place and also going to the British as a strong member of the southern region team.

The eldest of the girls Amy Field competing in the ‘out of age’ competition had a very good day finishing in overall 2nd position and placed first on vault and Asymmetric bars.

Basingstoke Sports Awards

The gym club won several awards at the recent Basingstoke Sports Awards. The Sports Awards are co-ordinated by the Local Sports Council and celebrate the achievements of clubs, teams, coaches, officials and individuals involved in sport in Basingstoke.

Congratulations go to Anne Bidmead who won Professional Coach of the Year and the Junior Teamgym Squad who won Junior Team of the Year. The club also took home the prestigious Club of the Year award, a title they have won 3 times before. Congratulations also go to Allana Penny, Dan Lannigan, Jordan Lucas, Ray Wilson, Steve Bond and Claire Williams who were all shortlisted for various awards.

 

Junior Girls Qualify for British Championships

On Sunday 1st March, Basingstoke's junior teamgym girls went head to head with some of the best teams in the country at the Southern Teamgym Tournament which was a qualifier for the British Championships. The team of 11 put in a focused and determined performance to win the silver medal and, with score of 22.15, easily gain qualification for the British Championships. The highlight of the day was the team's fantasic floor routine which earned them the highest floor score of the day.

 

Unwanted Gym Equipment

Basingstoke Gym is looking for fitness equipment to benefit our squad gymnasts' conditioning programmes. Do you have an unwanted rowing machine, exercise bike, or cross trainer that you would be willing to donate to the gym? Any items in a reasonable condition will be gratefully received.

If you own any unwanted equipment that you would be able to donate, please contact us.
