What to bring, what to wear

Attire & Equipment

These rules are in part mandated by British Gymnastics for valid insurance cover, and in part our own, to keep everyone safe in the gym.

Younger Micro, Mini & Primary

Training leotard is mandatory for all sessions including weekends. Your leotard must have a back; backless styles are not permitted for safe spotting.

Youth, Junior & Senior

Club vest (tight-fitting) is required for weekend sessions. A training leotard or tight fitness wear is acceptable for mid-week training.

All groups – always

• Hair tied securely; ponytail, plait, or bun (must not touch the floor in a handstand)
• Nails kept short, safe spotting and partner work
• Leotard must have a back; coaches may decline to spot without
• Tight-fitting vests only (Junior/Senior), no baggy
• No jewellery at any time; rings, earrings, necklaces
• No backless styles, required for valid BG insurance cover

Bring to every session

• Water bottle (essential for long squad sessions)
• Socks for trampoline and warm-up
• Training notebook (A5) for goals, coach notes & progress
• Spare hair grips and bands
• Hand guards and chalk where required
• Optional: skipping rope, Dynobands, ankle weights

If you are unsure whether something is appropriate, ask your coach before training.

How we train together

Rules & Expectations

A successful training environment depends on small, consistent habits from everyone; gymnasts, families, and coaches alike.

85% attendance minimum

TeamGym is a team sport; your gymnast's absence directly affects their teammates. We require a minimum of 85% attendance across the season. Regular absences may affect selection and squad placement.

Pre-competition commitment

No missed sessions in the 4–6 weeks immediately before a competition, except for genuinely unavoidable circumstances. Please inform your coach of any known conflicts as far in advance as possible.

Training structure

Each session follows a set structure: warm-up, conditioning, apparatus work, cool-down, then tidy-up. Gymnasts are expected to contribute to tidying the gym. A training notebook (A5) should be brought to every session.

Behaviour in the gym

Respect teammates and coaches at all times. Phones are not permitted during training. Parents watching from outside must not communicate with gymnasts mid-session. Negative sideline behaviour will be addressed under the Codes of Conduct.

Media & sharing

Do not post training videos or photos containing other gymnasts without their explicit consent. The club shares approved highlights on official channels.

Holiday dates & closures

Confirmed closure weeks include May Half Term (25–31 May) and a second summer week (TBC). Additional closures are listed on the website calendar.

Drop-off & collection

The club is not responsible for a gymnast until a coach accepts them. Under-11s must be collected by a responsible adult. Over-11s may leave unaccompanied unless you request otherwise in writing to info@basingstokegym.co.uk. Parents can watch training via the big screens in reception.

Leaving the squad

One month's written notice is required. Kit (leotards, catsuits) may be resold through squad WhatsApp groups. Contact Katie Hayes to discuss.
